They say
“This feels personal.”
Your response
“I’m not making a judgment about you as a person. I’m addressing a specific behavior and its effect. Tell me what I said that made this feel personal.”
First, check this
Did you describe observable behavior and its effect, or use labels, generalizations, or a tone that turned the feedback into a judgment of the person?
Why this works
Feedback becomes personal when it attacks identity, character, or worth rather than addressing conduct and its effect. The response states the intended boundary and invites the employee to identify wording that crossed it. The manager can then correct their language if necessary without dropping legitimate feedback. This page is about the content and delivery of a particular message, not whether the manager gives too much negative feedback overall.
Don’t say
“You’re taking this too personally.”
